Course Overview:

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, 5400 Canadians will be diagnosed with oral cancer and 1500 will die from it. Oral cancer can spread quickly but it can be cured if diagnosed early and treated before it spreads. Most physicians do not look inside their patients’ mouths on routine exams. Hygienists have a unique opportunity to identify oral cancer lesions early. Are you up to the challenge?

Dr. Renick graduated from the University of Toronto with a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree in 1983. He went on to pursue specialty training, and in 1987, he received a Diploma in Oral Pathology from the University of Toronto. He continued his specialty training, and in 1991, he received a Diploma in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery from the University of Toronto. Dr. Renick is the only dentist in Canada with dual specialty training in both Oral Surgery and Oral Pathology.

His training includes experience at Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Mt. Sinai’s facial pain clinic, Sunnybrook’s multidisciplinary Mouth Clinic, The Odette (Bayview) Cancer Centre, and Princess Margaret Hospital.

Dr.  Renick has been in Oral Surgery practice in Newmarket for over 30 years. He offers comprehensive oral surgical and dental implant related services as well as diagnosis and treatment of difficult Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine cases. and dental implant related service. He provides a full spectrum of anesthetic services having provided general anesthesia to more than 15,000 patients. He was staff surgeon at Southlake Hospital for over 25 years.​

Dr. Renick is also the Chief Clinical Advisor for Proteocyte Diagnostics at the MaRS centre in Toronto. This company developed the Straticyte test which is the most advanced oral cancer diagnostic test currently available worldwide.
