Course Overview:

Periodontal Disease is currently the sixth most common chronic disease in the world. This is the first major change in the classification system since 1999, in response to major changes in our understanding of the disease process, the potential risk factors, and the complex nature of individual patients. This is an effort to redefine, modernize and standardize the classification system. This system introduces the Staging and Grading system used in oncology to understand the disease severity and case management complexity as well as the biological features such as the rate of disease progression, risk for further advancement, and the potential threats to general health.

This course will answer the following questions:

  • What is different about this system from the previous one?
  • How does this system change our treatment strategies?
  • What parameters do we need to evaluate for this system?
  • How do we use this system to change how we treat our patients?
  • And much more….

Handouts will be provided that will simply the updated classification of periodontal disease.
